Resident Advisor

The Resident Advisor monitors facility residents in daily activities to ensure security and safety by providing sight and direct supervision, coordinating and overseeing movement, and observing behavior and interaction with other residents to ensure that disciplinary procedures are implemented and are being followed.  Protects residents from abuse or violation of constitutional rights.  Participates in the rotation schedule for the facilities Control Center, the duties of which include: controlling access of individuals and materials to designated areas; operating facility radio system; operating switchboard, intercom and phone systems; issuing and receiving equipment and keys from staff; maintaining logs and forms for facility residents; controlling, monitoring and supervising on-campus movement; mail receipt and distribution; completion of various logs and reports and general clerical functions as assigned.  Maintains and monitors inventory of pod.  Participates in transporting residents when necessary and drives facility vehicles to do so.  Conducts individual and facility wide searches as directed by facility administration.  Responsible for serving meals, performing general maintenance and custodial work, and administering medications/first aid to residents.  This position is supervised by the Shift Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent.  Successful completion of a comprehensive child protective services and criminal background investigation.  Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.  Must successfully complete a physical examination and pass a pre-employment drug screen.  The incumbent is required to serve a one-year probationary period.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS: 

Works typically in an institutional setting for detained juveniles as well as in an office environment.  Applicant should be comfortable with necessary use of physical contact.  Must possess ability to complete Handle With Care, First Aid/CPR and 40 hours of on-site training.  Frequent walking is required.  Must be able to lift up to 70 lbs.  Regular contact is made with Shift Supervisors, Resident Advisor II, juvenile residents, parents/guardians, court officials, school officials, law enforcement officials and the general public.

SALARY RANGE:  $41,000 – $50,916 / annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
